Care that reaches the people furthest from a clinic.

Afro Edge works with local hospitals and the Ministry of Health and Child Care to support staff, prevent HIV and look after the wellbeing of children and young people in Victoria Falls and Hwange.

The need

In Hwange District, a sick child can mean a long walk to the nearest clinic, and a nurse with too many patients and too few medicines at the end of it. For families in Victoria Falls and the villages around it, getting care is rarely simple, and waiting can cost dearly.

HIV still touches many households here, and it weighs most on women and young people. A mother’s health shapes her children’s future. When heat, scarce water and poor sanitation are added, illness spreads faster than a family can cope.

What we do

  • Hospital and clinic support

Volunteers and local staff help with administration, basic treatment and patient support, easing the load on understaffed nurses and doctors.

  • HIV prevention and care

Sexual and reproductive health education for adolescents, follow-up of people who have stopped treatment, and home-based care for people living with HIV and for older people.

  • Psychosocial support camps

Camps for children and young people affected by HIV and AIDS, each with a focus on emotional wellbeing. Groups of students and professionals have travelled from abroad to take part.

  • Community health awareness

Education on HIV, malaria and other common diseases, delivered in the villages and wards where people live.

  • Health-professional placements

Nurses, midwives, pharmacists, medical students and doctors can volunteer with us. Their placement fees help fund the programme.

Our track record

Since 2012 our health work has grown through partnerships.

  • Partnership with a Victoria Falls hospital and the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
  • Quarterly psychosocial support camps, the flagship of the programme.
  • Volunteers from the United States, Britain, Denmark, Spain, South Africa and Germany.
  • Work with the Zimbabwe Medical Students Association.
Where we are heading

Women and girls at the centre.

We are putting women’s and girls’ health first: adolescent sexual and reproductive health, HIV prevention and care, and support through pregnancy and early childhood.

We are also tracking the health effects of a hotter, drier climate, and linking this work to our water, sanitation and waste projects.
